Chima Igwe was born 57 years ago, a Nigerian! He is an old boy of Danfodio Road Primary School and Sacred Heart College all in Aba, South East-Nigeria.
He holds a National Certificate in Education (NCE), B.Sc. (1st Class Hons.) Chemistry degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; M.Sc. Chemistry degree from the University of Lagos; Ph.D Natural Products Chemistry degree from Universite Nationale du Benin now Universite d’Abomey - Calavi, Benin Republic; and Doctorate degree (in-view) in Public Health with research interest on the social causes, incidences, control, and prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and so on using herbal products in foods and medicines from Walden University, United States of America.
Chima Igwe is an organic/natural products chemist with a broad and wide range of experience in natural products extraction, isolation and structural elucidation techniques.
He has an excellent knowledge in industry-driven and bioassay-guided Research and Development in the extraction and isolation of essential oils, fats, flavours, fragrances, sweeteners, colours, emulsifiers, stabilizers and bioactive compounds/ plant metabolites from natural sources.
He has a wide-range of experience in products and process development.
Chima Igwe joined FIIRO in July, 1991 as a Research Officer I and rose through the ranks to become the Director, Chemical, Fibre and Environmental Technology Department in June, 2010. He was appointed Ag. DG/CEO effective 13th May,2019. He is involved in management, policy-making and implementation in various areas of the Science, technology and Innovation processes.
He is a Public Analyst, Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON); Fellow South African Chemical Institute (SACI); Fellow, Institute of Chartered Administrators and Researchers of Nigeria (ICARN); Fellow, Institute For Operations Research of Nigeria (IFORN); Fellow, Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria (ICAD); Associate, International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC); Member, Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN); Member, Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (IPAN); Member, Toxicological Society of South Africa (TOXSA); Member, Institute of Food Technologist (IFT); USA; Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) where he has served as Chairman in various Council Committees, National Assistant Secretary and National Secretary in the 1990s.
He is a member of the French Cultural Centre, Lagos.
He is a Federal Government of Nigeria Scholar, Universal Friendship League Scholar, a UNIDO/UNDP resource person in the processing of Medicinal, Aromatic and Pesticide Plants and Member, Nigeria-South African Bi-National Commission (Science & Technology Sub-Committee).
He is FIIRO Best Researcher of the year, 1996; Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, University of Pretoria, South Africa; National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa Awardee / Grantee and resource person in the International Commission on Bio-Resource Technology, India.
Dr. Chima Igwe is an external examiner to many institutions locally and internationally; Visiting Professor, Phyto-Chemistry, University of Pretoria, South Africa and Visiting Professor, Phyto-Chemistry, Nirmala College, Tamil Nadu, India.
He has held many National and International appointments and assignments and a Pro Dono Consultant Industrial Chemist to many Manufacturing Industries locally and internationally.
He is widely published and read locally and internationally in scientific journals, scientific magazines, monographs, technical memos and books with over 90 publications.
Chima Igwe holds 8 Patents and 4 Registered Product Trade Marks.
He is married with children!
